Obituary for Doreen Mundie

TRYON – Doreen Fayette Mundie of Tryon, passed away, Friday morning, October 20, 2023, at Upstate Community Hospice House in Landrum.

Born in Detroit, MI, she was the daughter of  Robert and Elizabeth Mundie. After attending nursing school in Detroit, she married Conrad Schliske and had daughter Dawn.

The family moved to Tryon, NC in the early 1970’s, found property and built a home. Doreen worked at St. Luke's Hospital as a scrub nurse and worked in the recovery room. The couple divorced  in the early 1980’s. A few years later, Doreen married Alan Coren and settled in Green Creek. She established a garden and a weaving business. In 1994, they divorced and once again Doreen recreated her life. She attended massage school in 1995 and spent more than a decade providing massage and counsel to her clients.

Soon after moving to NC, Doreen discovered a love for gardening and the natural world and continued gardening until her health declined a year before her passing. She had an intense compassion for the suffering of others and animals, resulting in her rescuing and loving a number of dogs over the last 20 years of her life.

Doreen was compassionate, intense, and creative. She was a loving mother who imparted a strong sense of right and wrong and a love of learning to her surviving daughter, Dawn Summers.  She wished to pass with little fanfare and requested no memorial service.

In lieu of flowers or other remembrances, consider making a donation or offer time to a community service of your choice. By lifting and supporting others, we can ease suffering and bring joy to the lives of others, be they human or animal. Mitakuye Oyasin (We are all related.)
