Obituary for Alfred Wiik

Alfred Dewain Wiik, 86, of Hendersonville, N.C passed away on November 30, 2023.  He was born in Deluth, Minnesota on January 30, 1937.  He was the son of the late Thuree Ferdinand Wiik and Helen West Wiik.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Albin Wiik and Roy Wiik; sisters, Geraldine W. Henson, Lois W. Dale, and Harriet W. Merrell. 

Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and a favorite cousin Lorriane Hanson.

Alfred attended Hendersonville S.D.A church where he had many friends who would come visit him at Autumn Care of Saluda and sing to him.

He was a graduate of Southern Missionary College.  Alfred served in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany, serving for two years as a medic in the clinic.  After his time in the service, he taught industrial arts, body and fender shop at Jefferson Texas for four years.  He later ran a parts store in Ooltewah, Tennessee for a while.  Alfred also worked with his nephew Ken Henson (Alf/Ken Enterprises) making UFO kites, mailbox protection bags, along with building mini barns.  Kens wife Miriam helped run the “Little Orbit Donut Machine”.  Alfred partnered with Larry Merrell for six months running a sawmill in Morganton, NC.  He worked as a carpenter for many years, building his own home, his parent’s home, and many cabins at Nosoca Pines Ranch and many other homes.  Alfred worked with his friend Bruce Middleton fixing trailers for 25 years.

Alfreds passions included going to trade lots, collecting coins, arrowheads, elephants, and musical instruments.  He was a talented harmonica player.  Alfred loved being outside in nature.

Alfred got to visit his dad’s homeland of Sweden several times and once had the opportunity to take his sisters and aunt.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Autumn Care of Saluda and to his friend of 25 years, Bruce Middleton (wife Kathleen) for their much-appreciated love and care.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., May 3, 2024 at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery Chapel in Black Mountain.
